Today we planted garlic the Through the Forest way! All of this came from garlic seed that we carefully saved from this years crop starting back in June cleaning, curing, trimming, sorting, and protecting. Finally it is in the ground, tucked in to bed with shredded pine and leaf mulch from the forest. Graced with a rainfall shortly after planting - a welcome sight after more than 37 days of drought.🧄(And a couple bonus photos)
Some of our favorite fall photos:: The first carrots from the farm! Planting romaine lettuce, last call for blushing tomatoes (first fall freeze coming tonight). Lots of good cooking —kale salad, Thai curry, hot sauce! Stunning dahlias and last rose of the season. So much beauty in the fall garden.
Can you guess which two bottles of chili powder were made with peppers from the farm and which one is store bought? Hint: the real deal has their parent pepper next to them. Look at how bright red the farm made cayenne is compared to the store bought. Wow! And the fatali pepper powder is such a fun bright yellow color but don’t be fooled it has quite a kick to it #fatali #cayenne #farmfresh #throughtheforestfarm

Today was the final day of the 2024 CSA! What a ride it has been. The CSA started in the beginning of April and we have been putting together boxes of fresh produce / flowers every Friday or Saturday since then with just 3 weekends off. Most weeks we were worried that there wouldn’t be enough. We planted and replanted - some thing took and some things didn’t. But somehow we always were able to harvest way more than expected and get those boxes filled with high quality produce. It was especially hard being the first year, starting with the entire area just being heavily compacted grass and weeds. But we learned so much and are so proud of what we accomplished. We would not have been able to do this without the support that we received from friends, family and our CSA members. The CSA rang true to the name - Community Supported Agriculture. We got to meet so many amazing people and received lots of positive feedback which we are so grateful for. We are also grateful for each and everyone of you who is following along and helping us out on this journey. Thank You! Here’s to many more years of farming “Through the Forest” ! ! ! #summerCSA #throughtheforestfarm #localproduce #clarksvillemd 📷: @vickygoodphotography
It’s the beginning of storage crop season. When the rest of the garden is hanging on by a thread, garlic is a hardy and robust presence that keeps all year long. We’re even still enjoying the scapes which last a surprisingly long time in the fridge. It’s still two more months before garlic replanting kicks off the 2025 growing season but for now we’ll just enjoy the remaining warm days of summer and the aromas of fresh garlic in the kitchen. We also have limited quantities of seed garlic for sale on our website - link in bio. 📷: @vickygoodphotography #garlic #throughtheforestfarm #storagecrops #chesnokred #rocambolegarlic #marketgarden #howardcountymd #clarksvillemd
